The National Assembly has adjourned Wednesday morning sitting due to lack of quorum.
Article 121(1) of the Constitution provides that the quorum for the National Assembly shall be 50 Members.
Only a handful of MPs showed up, with a majority keeping off after a Tuesday late-night sitting to hear the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
As per the procedure, the bell rang to alert legislators who were in Parliament to attend the session but only a few appeared forcing the sitting to be adjourned until 2.30 pm.
Political drama
The lawmakers in a dramatic session eventually voted to impeach the MP for abuse of office.
The Motion by Kibwezi West lawmaker Mwengi Mutuse got support from 282 Members while 44 opposed.
The motion has proceeded to the Senate and if approved, Gachagua would become the first deputy president to be removed from office since impeachment was introduced in Kenya’s revised 2010 constitution.
The DP who was allocated two hours to defend himself against 11 charges including abuse of office, gross misconduct and corruption before the vote termed the motion baseless.
After the ouster vote, the DP on X quoted scriptures saying all is well.
“It is well,” Gachagua said in a short statement after the vote, alongside Bible verses calling for thankfulness in all circumstances.
At a press conference on Monday, he had branded the motion as “outrageous” and “sheer propaganda”, calling it a plot to hound him out of office.
