Ten charged in Ksh1B land fraud case

Ten suspects were on Monday charged with fraud in a Ksh1 billion land deal in Nairobi.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects conspired with intent to defraud Realty Brokers Limited a prime parcel of land by providing a false letter of allotment from the National Land Commission to facilitate the registration in the name of Mwadi Women Entrepreneurs Limited.

The ten include a Registrar of Titles at the Ministry of Lands headquarters Ardhi House, Jacob Cartwright Owino, and a Land Administration officer, Andrew Aseri Kirungu, who were further charged with abuse of office.

Others are  Diana Njeri Muiyuro, James Mbote Gicheha, Joseph Njoroge Kimani, Joseph Gichohi Kinyanjui, Gladys Wambui Mwangi, Mohamed Jimale Abdille, Charles Mwangi Waithaka and George Ndungu Mumbi.

The suspects were also charged with making a false document and obtaining registration by false pretences.

Nine out of the ten suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges before Chief Magistrate Hon. Lucas Onyina and were released on Ksh100,000 cash bail.

The tenth suspect Andrew Aseri Kirungu, failed to appear before the court citing illness.
