A security guard stationed at Java House Kimathi Street who got fired for allegedly sheltering and shielding members of the public during the GenZ demonstrations has been reinstated.

This follows intervention by the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PASRA) which also saw Vincent Chepkwony awarded with the highest honour, commendation and recognition for a private security officer in Kenya.

PSRA which is a Government Agency feted the officer for his courage, selfless patriotism and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property.

“We commend Chepkwony for his outstanding service and express our gratitude for his unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” said the PSRA CEO Fazul Mahamed.

The sacking of the officer by Hatari Security for allowing protesters inside the restaurant sparked uproar and condemnation, prompting PSRA to convene a consultative meeting and launch investigations into the incident.

“In light of the public concerns following Chepkwony’s dismissal by Hatari Security, PSRA convened a consultative meeting today. The meeting, attended by Mr. Chepkwony and Mr. Stephen Mwangi, the Managing Director of Hatari Security, aimed to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his termination and seek a fair resolution” the CEO said.

After a comprehensive review, the Authority on the contrary established that Chepkwony’s actions were heroic, patriotic and commendable and therefore warranted a promotion and not a dismissal from duty.

Consequently, the Authority directed Hatari Security Limited to reinstate him to his role as a security guard with immediate effect.

Mahamed said the reinstatement stands as a testament to the core values that uphold the private security industry in Kenya.

“This decision underscores the critical role security guards play in maintaining public safety and protecting property. PSRA remains committed to upholding the welfare and dignity of security officers, as outlined in Section 9 (I) of the Private Security Regulation Act No. 13 of 2016. Mr. Chepkwony has subsequently been awarded the highest commendation and recognition for a Private Security Officer in Kenya for his bravery and unwavering commitment to duty” Mahamed stated.
