Namibia’s Founding President Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma has died at the age of 95.
He passed away on February 8, 2025 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Windhoek.
President Nangolo Mbumba announced his death on Sunday morning, describing him as a “gallant son” of Namibia who dedicated his life to the country’s liberation and development.
Nujoma, who had been hospitalised for medical treatment over the past three weeks, led Namibia’s independence struggle and became its first president in 1990, serving three terms until 2005.
“As Founding President, Dr. Nujoma provided maximum leadership to our nation and motivated every Namibian to build a country that stands tall and proud among the nations of the world,” President Mbumba stated.
The Namibian government is set to announce a period of national mourning and burial arrangements after consultations with the Nujoma family.
