Mbooni Boys High School in Makueni has been closed indefinitely after property of unknown value was destroyed when two dormitories were torched allegedly by students on two consecutive days this week.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday at 11:30 pm when a dormitory, housing 180 students, was set ablaze.
The students were forced to sleep in the cold as they watched their belongings go up in flames.
In the second incident, which took place on Thursday at around 5:00 am, another dormitory was torched, displacing 200 more students.
No injuries were reported, but the damage was significant, leaving the affected students with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
Speaking to journalists, Benjamin Mauko, Mbooni West Subcounty Director of Education confirmed the incidents saying students should look for other alternative ways of solving issues that emerge.
“In the Tuesday night incident, 180 students were affected, and today 160 students are particularly distressed as they lost everything in the blaze. They were left with nothing but what they were wearing,” he explained.
“Students must understand that burning dormitories is not the solution. I urge them to seek alternative ways to address issues rather than resorting to destructive measures that ultimately harm the entire school community, especially the parents who will bear the financial burden of rebuilding,” Mauko added.
Mauko declined to speculate on the motives behind the attacks, he assured that investigations are underway, and authorities are working to identify those responsible while adding that over 260 students have nowhere to sleep hence the school will remain closed indefinitely.
