Kenyan musical ‘Lwanda Otero” based on the legendary tale of Lwanda Magere leads this year’s Kenya Theatre Awards with an impressive 12 nominations. This modern adaptation captivated audiences and critics alike throughout its theatre run in 2024.

Given its wide appeal and enjoyable storytelling here are some of the elements that we think made it a hit.

  1. It was a fresh take on a classic tale

Lwanda Otero reimagines the iconic story of Lwanda Magere, a mighty warrior from Kenyan folklore. The play blends traditional narratives with contemporary themes, making it resonate with today’s audiences. It shares this with another highly nominated play, Tom Mboya, from Too Early For Birds; it earned seven nominations.

By addressing issues such as betrayal, power, and identity, it offers a narrative that’s both timeless and timely.

In an interview during the play’s run, actor Robert Agengo, who portrays Lwanda Magere, emphasised the importance of Africans telling their own stories.

“It is very important for Africans to tell African stories in their own way, to retain authenticity for coming generation. Also, we have beautiful stories worth telling, that alone is an important reason for me to tell our stories,” he said.

  1. Exceptional cast and crew

The success of “Lwanda Otero” is largely attributed to its talented ensemble. In addition to Robert Agengo who leads as Lwanda Magere, delivering a powerful performance, Isaboke Nyakundi takes on the role of Konte, bringing depth to the antagonist’s character.

The production is the brainchild of writer and director John Jumbi, whose vision is brought to life by a dedicated team.

Agengo highlighted the significance of good teamwork, noting that rehearsals, intentional marketing, and having fun were key to their success.

“The success behind Lwanda Otero is good teamwork. Rehearsals and rehearsals and rehearsals, intentional marketing, and last but not least, having fun while doing it. The director had a vision, and he led a good, talented and dedicated team,” Mr Agengo said.

  1. Striking visual and musical elements

The musical component of Lwanda Otero is a standout feature. Led by Alice Kimanzi and her team, the original music blends traditional sounds with modern rhythms, creating a captivating auditory experience. The choreography and dance sequences add energy and emotion, enhancing the storytelling. The set and costume designs transport audiences to the mystical world of Lwanda Magere, immersing them fully in the narrative.

  1. Community and cultural impact

“Lwanda Otero” serves as both entertainment and a cultural touchstone. By bringing a legendary Kenyan story to the stage, it fosters a sense of pride and prompts discussions about heritage and identity.

In the same interview, Isaboke Nyakundi noted that the synergy among the cast and crew was instrumental in delivering a performance that resonated with the community.

“The success behind Lwanda is the commitment of the whole crew and the passion the actors have for the craft. The cast and the whole crew are all in sync in what they are doing. The synergy is just amazing,” he said.

  1. Critical acclaim and audience praise

Since its debut at the Braeburn School Theatre on Gatanga Road, “Lwanda Otero” played to sold-out audiences.

The production also attracted notable figures such as Lulu Hassan and Nick Mutuma, underscoring its broad appeal.

Critics praised its innovative approach to storytelling, compelling performances, and high production values. The buzz surrounding the play undoubtedly contributed to its multiple nominations, including Best Production, Best Actor, and Best Costume Design.
