The National Government has partnered with Kenya Red Cross Society to register all people living with disabilities in Kilifi North and South SubCounties.

County Director from the National Council of People Living with Disabilities (PWD), Mathias Tsuma said the government is committed to empower People With Disabilities across the country in order to improve their livelihoods.

He revealed that the assessment and registration process will be conducted in gazzetted hospitals in Kilifi, Mariakani, and Malindi on Thursday and Wednesday concurrently.

“The aim is to ensure persons living with Disabilities are identified formally and also be given power to access government services that have been set aside for them,” he said.

Tsuma also added that the partnership with Kenya Red Cross will come in handy in enabling the registration of people at ward level in order to reduce the cost of travelling to access these services.

“We are very thankful to the Kenya Red Cross and the NGAO that is the office of the County Commissioner for their structures for making this possible by ensuring persons living with disabilities are registered and we are optimistic they will come out in large numbers to access these services,” said Tsuma.

Zipporah Kuria in charge of Sexual Reproductive Health support at Kenya Red Cross Society lauded the process saying it will improve the access and upkeep in reproductive health services by reducing Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases and improve disability inclusion.

“One of the things that we are doing to promote inclusion is the assessment and registration of persons with disabilities, so this whole week we are in Kilifi South Sub County in partnership with the National Council for persons with disabilities we are assessing persons with disabilities living with various condition such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, mental disabilities,” she said.

The registration of PWD will enable them gain access to government services such as getting supporting devices, scholarships and LPO finances for those whose who want to engage in businesses.
