Gor Mahia were crowned the FKFPL Champions for a record 21st time in style after beating Bidco United 4-3 in an entertaining season-ender match played on Sunday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County.
Golden Boot winner Benson Omalla scored twice in the first before adding a second three minutes later, before John Kelwish pulled one back for the hosts in the 35th minute, with Kogallo leading 2-1 at the interval.
Kelwish equalised in the 66th minute before Mark Shaban restored the Green Army’s lead 7 minutes from the final whistle.
Rooney Onyango extended the vistor’s lead with a 4th in the 93rd minute, but Bidco responded immediately through Jacob Onyango, who got his name on the score sheet in 2 minutes later, as Gor earned a hard-fought victory in a 7-goal thriller.
Gor were handed the league trophy after emerging champions amassed 73 points, recorded 21 victories, 10 draws, and lost three matches.
The coronation ceremony was graced by ICT and digital economy CS Eliud Owalo who committed to support the club in their continental assignment.
Gor Mahia will represent the country in the CAF Champions League next season after they were kicked out this season for failing to meet club licensing rules.
Tusker FC finished 2nd with 65 points after beating Kakamega Homeboyz by a solitary goal, followed by Police FC with 57 points after playing to a 2-2 draw against Kariobangi Sharks in their final match.
Bandari silenced Talanta FC 2-1 to finish 4th with 52 points, a point ahead of the 5th-placed AFC Leopards, who defeated Ulinzi Stars 1-0 in their backyard, dislodging Nairobi City Stars to 6th.
Shabana FC survived relegation, ending the season in 14th place with 38 points after beating Muranga Seal 1-0.
Muhoroni Youth and Nzoia Sugar have been relegated after finishing in the bottom two positions, while Sofapaka, who came from behind to thrash Nzoia Sugar 3-1, will play 3rd placed in the National Super League for a slot in next season’s top flight league.
Mathare United and Mara Sugar have already been promoted to play in next season’s FKF Premier League.
