2024 was a monumental year for women in music, with female artists achieving ground-breaking success across multiple charts, according to the British Phonographic Institute (BPI).
Women held the top spot on the singles chart for an unprecedented 34 weeks, with Sabrina Carpenter alone accounting for 21 weeks thanks to her hits “Espresso,” “Taste,” and “Please, Please, Please.”
Half of the year’s best-selling albums were by women, led by Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poets Department, which sold 783,000 copies—the highest for any artist since Ed Sheeran in 2017.
Swift also had three additional albums (1989 [Taylor’s Version], Lover, and Folklore) in the top 20.
Albums by Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Charli XCX were nominated for Album of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards, with Charli XCX’s Brat becoming a cultural phenomenon.
Female artists topped the Official Albums Chart with 12 releases, matching a 2023 record.
Highlights include Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and The Last Dinner Party’s debut album, Prelude To Ecstasy.
