KCSE 2024: More candidates achieve grade A, greater number gain direct entry to university

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba announced on Thursday that more candidates achieved an A grade in last year’s Kenya Secondary Certificate Examination (KCSE), and that a greater number will gain direct entry to university compared to 2023.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 KCSE national examination results at Mtihani House, Migos noted that 477 more students attained the highest score this year, while over 45,000 additional candidates scored the grades necessary for university entry.

“There were 1,693 (0.18%) candidates who obtained an overall grade A in the 2024 KCSE examination compared to 1,216 (0.14%) candidates in 2023,” said the CS.

“The number of candidates with direct university entry qualifications of grade C+ and above was 246,391 (25.53%) in the 2024 KCSE examination, compared to 201,133 (22.27%) in 2023,” he added.

The CS also announced that the number of candidates achieving a grade C- (TVET Diploma) rose in the 2024 KCSE examination, with 476,889 (49.41%) attaining this score compared to 401,216 (44.42%) in 2023.

He confirmed that the number of candidates attaining a pass grade (grade D+ and above) was 605,774 compared to 526,222 in 2023.

In the 2024 KCSE examination, a total of 962,512 candidates sat the examination, compared to 899,453 candidates the previous year, representing an increase of 64,553 candidates (7.19%).

“Of the 962,512 candidates who sat the 2024 KCSE examination, 480,310 were male, while 482,202 were female, representing 49.90% and 50.10% of the total candidature, respectively. This is the first time since the inception of the KCSE examination that female candidates are more than male candidates,” explained the CS.
