Police officers from Laare Police Station in Igembe North sub-county, Meru County, have arrested a 16-year-old boy for the murder of his aunt.
Eticuras Koome is alleged to have stabbed his aunt multiple times with a knife.
According to Igembe North sub-county police commander Jerald Okari Marando, the suspect reportedly went to his aunt’s rental house in Kariugu village within Laare at around 3 a.m., claiming to have fallen from a motorcycle and seeking assistance.
When the aunt opened the gate, the suspect, armed with a knife, confronted her.
The suspect stabbed his aunt in the chest and head. Her husband, responding to her screams, was also stabbed by the suspect in the stomach.
Neighbours who heard the confrontation rushed to the scene. The aunt and her husband were taken to Maua General Hospital and then referred to Tigania Hospital.
The aunt succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, while her husband remains in critical condition at Tigania Hospital.
The sub-county police commander stated that police had commenced an investigation to establish the cause of the incident.
He appealed to the public to report crimes to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands, noting that an angry mob had attempted to lynch the suspect before police intervened.
Douglas Kiria, the brother of the deceased, expressed gratitude to the Laare police for their swift response, leading to the suspect’s arrest. He appealed for justice to be served.
