The UEFA Champions League, as the Round of 16 gets underway on the midweek of 4-5 March 2025, with German and Spanish derbies headlining the fixtures.
Tuesday features Club Brugge hosting Aston Villa, LOSC Lille heading to Borussia Dortmund, and a potential thriller between PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal.
The Dutch side knocked out Juventus in the playoff round and will be hoping for another major scalp when they face up to the Gunners.
“We’ve played against them; they are a really good team,” said the Gunners boss. “We have experienced it, and it will be really difficult. We know what we are facing. When you are at this stage, every team is really, really good.”
However, Arteta added, “When the time comes, we will be ready for it.”
Tuesday, 4 March, is headlined by the first leg of the derby tie between Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
While Los Blancos are the undisputed kings of the Champions League, Los Rojiblancos have never won the competition… but would absolutely love to end the reign of their hated neighbours.
“It’s a big game, a big game, and we’re prepared. That’s how I see it. A big game, and we’re ready,” said Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

His counterpart at Real, Carlo Ancelotti, had the following to say: “It will be difficult, as always. It will be a beautiful, entertaining, and equal match. The quality of the two teams is similar.”
Tuesday also sees Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, last season’s runners-up in the Champions League, welcome French side LOSC Lille to the always-atmospheric Westfalenstadion.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is wary of the challenge posed by PSG: “As is the case with ourselves, PSG are top of their domestic league and are enjoying a long unbeaten run.
This tells us all that we need to know about the challenge that we will face, but it is also a challenge that we will look forward to, knowing that we also fully deserve to be in the last 16.”
“We know our qualities. We had full confidence that we could win and go through, and that’s what happened,” said PSV midfielder Ismael Sabari.
Wednesday opens with Feyenoord hosting Inter Milan in Rotterdam—fresh from eliminating AC Milan in the playoffs—while the late evening kick-offs feature a trio of ‘bangers’!
Wednesday, 5 March, brings more action from Germany, with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen clashing in an all-Bundesliga battle at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria. That these two clubs are also competing for domestic honours adds to what will be a tense and spiky showdown.

Finally, a potential thriller awaits in Lisbon when Benfica welcomes Barcelona to Estadio da Luz for a repeat of their incredible match from the League Phase, which ended 5-4 in favour of the Catalans.
“Benfica is a difficult opponent because they play very well. They caused us a lot of problems in the League Phase match,” said Barca manager Hansi Flick.
