A joint operation led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other law enforcement agencies, has successfully dismantled an illicit drug and alcohol syndicate in the Pandipieri area of Migori County.

During the operation, authorities recovered 384 tariffs and 628 sticks of what is suspected to be marijuana, alongside 21.5 litres of chang’aa and dry green plant material believed to be cannabis.

The cannabis was packed in two sacks and a basin, while the items were stored in a plastic water container. Two phones were also seized as part of the operation.

Additional intelligence led to a raid on a suspected drug trafficking hub within Pandipieri, where two suspects were arrested.

A search of the premises resulted in the discovery of 40 tariffs and 230 sticks of suspected cannabis, along with 1.5 litres of chang’aa, uncustomed cigarette packets, more dry plant material and an improvised black smoking device.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the collaborative efforts of all the agencies involved.

“This successful operation underscores the strength of our multi-agency approach in tackling the spread of illicit drugs and alcohol. We are committed to protecting communities from the harmful effects of substance abuse,” Dr. Omerikwa said.

The CEO reiterated NACADA’s zero-tolerance stance on alcohol and drugs, stressing that such substances destroy lives, families, and communities. “We cannot allow our neighbourhoods to be overrun by the devastating consequences of drug abuse,” he added.

The seized items will undergo forensic analysis, while the suspects face legal action as investigations continue.

Dr. Omerikwa also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities, emphasizing that community involvement is crucial in the fight against substance abuse.

NACADA remains steadfast in its commitment to enforcing laws against illicit drugs and alcohol, with the CEO reaffirming, “This operation is a clear message that we will continue to take decisive action to protect our people and uphold the law.”
