The National Treasury is expected to disburse Ksh 7 billion this week for the construction of 7,000 classrooms for learners to transition to Grade 9.
This was revealed by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba before the National Assembly Education Committee to respond to concerns on the infrastructure preparedness of the country to transition Grade 9 learners to Junior Secondary School.
He expressed confidence that at least 11,000 classrooms will be completed by December to facilitate transition to Junior Secondary School. The transition requires at least 16,000 new classrooms to be constructed in public schools.
Education CS Julius Ogamba was optimistic the transition will be successful saying construction of 3500 classrooms at a cost of Ksh 3.5 billion was ongoing at was 70pc completion.
Further, he said construction of another 7500 classrooms at a cost of Ksh 7.5 billion was set to be completed by December.
The Education Ministry is now pursuing the release of Ksh 3 billion allocated to NGCDF for the construction of 5,000 classrooms.
In terms of teachers, CS Ogamba said 60,000 Junior School teachers will be retooled in November and December to prepare them for Grade 9 intakes.
Ogambo further told the committee 46,000 junior school intern teachers will be confirmed starting January.
Recruitment of an additional 20,000 teachers will follow in the next financial year.
