The security sector got a major boost Thursday as National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u read the budget for the year 2024-2025.
In the budget, Prof. the Cabinet Secretary announced that to improve security the sector was going to get an allocation of Ksh. 377.5 billion compared to Ksh. 338.2 billion allocated to the sector last year, an increase of Ksh. 39.3 billion. The funds are to support operations of the National Police Service, Defence, the National Intelligence Service and Prison Services.
“The proposed allocations include Ksh 173.1 billion for Defence; Ksh 110.6 billion for the National Police Service; Ksh 46.3 billion for the National Intelligence Service; and Ksh 32.7 billion for Prisons Services,” said Prof Njuguna
In comparison to last year, Ksh 144.9 billion went to Kenya Defence Forces; Ksh 98.6 billion for National Police Service; Ksh 44.3 billion for the National Intelligence Service; and Ksh 31.3 billion for Prisons Services.
While defending the decision to boost the allocation to the sector, the CS indicated that enhanced national security creates an enabling environment for business to thrive while aiding faster economic recovery.
At the same time, the CS announced an allocation of Ksh 13.9 billion this year to cater for leasing of police motor vehicles and the Modernization Programme. This is also an increase from funds allocated for leasing and modernization last year which stood at Ksh 9.3 billion.
To step up war on crime and enhance support to administration of justice, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary told the nation that he had proposed Ksh 918.4 million to equip the National Forensic Laboratory. This is also an increase considering that last year the Treasury allocated Ksh. 856 million towards the programme.
