Popular TikToker, Maria Wangari Kamunge, better known as Rish Kamunge on her social media platform, has been released on a KSh. 5 million bond.
Ms. Kamunge was granted on bond by Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina on Friday morning.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations announced her arraignment in court over her involvement in a job scam that targeted Kenyans seeking employment in Mauritius through her company Trustpine Travel Agency.
“Victims reported paying between KSh200,000 and KSh400,000 for job placements, only to discover that the promised opportunities were nonexistent,” the DCI said. “Some individuals even travelled to Mauritius, where they found themselves stranded at the airport without assistance and were ultimately deported back to Kenya.”
The directorate also revealed that their investigations uncovered a total of 43 victims who sent KSh12.9 million to the suspect cumulatively.
However, in his ruling on March 28, Magistrate Onyina stated that the prosecution had failed to present compelling reasons for her continued detention.
“The prosecution has not demonstrated that the suspect’s safety is at risk or provided evidence of multiple complainants filing grievances,” he said.
