Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Julius Korir says the completion of the construction of Thwake Dam is expected in December this year.
PS Korir said the Government is actively engaging stakeholders to fast-track funding to hasten the completion of Thwake Multipurpose Dam.
Funded by the Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB), Thwake Dam, once complete is going to benefit close to a million residents from the Lower Eastern counties of Makueni, Kitui, and parts of Machakos.

The Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary said this during an in interview on KBC’s show-The Shift Tuesday evening, where he highlighted major milestones the Water Ministry has achieved in three years.
According to the PS, key milestones the ministry has undertaken are in the areas of sanitation coverage, water coverage and quality of water Kenyans consume and the completion of Thwake Dam.
On sanitation, he noted that Nairobi County has the highest sanitation coverage of about 66pc where its residents have access to a good form of sanitation.
“The rest are either using septic tanks, which are emptied and then taken to the disposal places,” he said.
On increasing water coverage in the country, the PS underscored that the Kenya Kwanza administration has managed to increase the coverage which is now at 73pc and also expanded sanitation upto 93pc. He, however, noted that proper sewerage is very low.

“We did what we are calling National Water and Sanitation Investment Plan. This is a plan because we wanted to see how much it will take us to achieve 100pc coverage so that every Kenyan gets water and also sanitation,” said PS Julius Korir.
He said the estimated the cost of investment plan will cost about Ksh 995 billion.
