A helicopter carrying government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura Wednesday made an emergency landing in Gishungo, Kikuyu Constituency due to poor weather conditions.

Mwaura and Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Idriss Ahmed were onboard the chopper from Nyando after an emergency response intervention to support flood victims.

To mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, Mwaura had gone to Nyando in Kisumu to deliver non-food Items to affected families.

While giving thanks to God, Mwaura interacted with the residents who had shown up after the mishap and assured Kenyans he was safe.

“I am safe fellow Kenyans. Our plane had to make an emergency landing in Gishungo, Kikuyu Constituency due to poor weather conditions. Idriss Ahmed the Secretary General of the Kenya Redcross and I had gone to Nyando in Kisumu to deliver relief of Non-Food Items (NFIs) to the Floods Affected Persons (FAPs). We arrived home safely and we thank GOD for this. Happy World Red Cross Day” he said.

Kenya Red Cross has been busy supporting emergency search and rescue efforts since the onset of the heavy rainfall in March which has caused deadly floods, flash floods, landslides, and overflowing rivers.

So far 238 people have died, 75 missing while 57,202 households have been affected, with over 47,000 households displaced.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is commemorated on 8 May, to celebrate local to global humanitarian action.

This year’s theme is #KeepingHumanityAlive.

“With support from the National and County Government, and partners, the Kenya Red Cross continues to be actively engaged in life-saving interventions, distribution of food and non-food items, and health outreaches, among other critical interventions” the organization said.
