The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a philatelic plate of six stamps for World Sustainable Transport Day which was marked on November 26.
Each year on this date, the United Nations recognizes the crucial role of safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, in supporting sustainable economic growth, improving people’s social well-being and strengthening international cooperation and trade between countries.
The year 2024 also marks the sixtieth anniversary of the world’s first high-speed train. On October 1, 1964, the Shinkansen Tokaido, commonly known as the “high-speed train”, was launched between Tokyo and Osaka, just before the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Whether for work or pleasure, the choices we make in getting from one place to another – by car, plane, ferry, bike, scooter or public transport – can have a significant impact on carbon emissions. Making informed lifestyle choices when it comes to transportation can help us reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
By promoting an inclusive and sustainable transportation system, we can facilitate social and economic development, mitigate environmental damage and improve overall quality of life.
