U-21 teams raring to go ahead of Africa Championship
The Kenya U-21 men’s and women’s hockey teams are raring to go ahead of of the forthcoming Africa Junior Hockey Championships scheduled 12th-16th Ismailia, Egypt.
The two teams were unveiled today by the Kenya Hockey Union and are expected to depart for the championship this weekend.
The men’s side will be gunning for their first continental diadem after 41 previous unsuccessful attempts.
The squad of 18 players will be captained by Charles Ashiundu, while head coach Michael Malungu will seek to guide the side to glory from the bench.
The men’s side will open its campaign against hosts Egypt on Sunday before playing against South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The women’s side is led by captain Beverlyn Akoth who is deputised by Healy Mutheu.
Rose Mbulo and Tracy Nungari are the coach and team manager respectively.
The ladies out fit will also play hosts Egypt before taking on South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Two top placed teams at the end of the round robbin matches will automatically qualify for the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup.
The men’s finals are scheduled December 5th-16th in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia while the ladies tourney is expected to be held in Santiago Chile between December 7th-17th 2023.
