Shadrack Korir and Fridah Ndinda crowned winners of inaugural Ndukuma Dam Run

Shadrack Korir emerged the winner of the 15km Ndukuma Dam Run,Makueni County, after finishing first in  45:28.

Atanas Kioko was placed second after posting 45:39 while Benson Mushow was third.

Korir who  won the Twin City Marathon  in January spoke of his delight of winning the race that’s meant to raise awareness on environmental conservation

“The race was not easy, especially for the men. I train at Iten Camp which is very high altitude. I had tension before I started, however I gave myself morale to soldier on. When reaching 9 kilometers I saw I would win the race and accelerated at the hills,” said Koror.

“At 12 kilometers I was alone and the cheering from  people propelled my morale and I accelerated to the finish line,” he posed.

Korir revealed that he was preparing to run the Euston Marathon in Minnesota in America in January saying Ndukuma Run was a place to test his body whether he is able to participate next year.

The last time he was in America, Korir won the Twin City 42 Km Marathon in Minnesota and says he wants to participate in big events in the upcoming London Marathon next year.

In women’s category,Fridah Ndinda clocked 49:47 seconds to emerge victorious while  Nypha Kiteto registred  51 minutes and 11.1 seconds to finish second as  Winfred Mbithe was placed third in  51minutes  and 25.4 .

Ndinda finished second in this year’s Nairobi City Marathon and hails from Machakos County rallied for support from stakeholders calling for early talent identification.

“Support for students is lacking. I encourage people to support talented students in schools. This will have great benefits to the students. If well nurtured, they can earn a livelihood to uplift their families,” said Ndinda.

Ndinda who draws her inspiration from Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Bahrain-Kenyan born Mutile Yavi and reigning London Marathon champion Alexander Munyao is eyeing to participate in a race in South Africa.

The women’s 10km race was won by Jacinta Kavindu who posted 41:49.8, while  Diana Wanza timed  42:06.7 to finish second.Pauline Mbithe completed the podium dash in 43:13.5.

The men’s 10km race was won by Nelson Mapi came home the fastest clocking 35:21.2, Daniel Kioko was placed second in 35:30 as Michael Mwaluko  settled for third posting 35:51.

Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr revealed that they are planning the race to a full marathon in next year’s edition.
