The title race in Serie A will witness a defining clash this weekend, as the last two Scudetto holders, Napoli and Inter Milan, meet at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Match background

Napoli and Inter Milan have established themselves as the leading duo in Serie A this season, and this clash is effectively a ‘six pointer’ in the race to win the Scudetto.

The Partenopei will look to make best use of home advantage and the emotion that swells inside their stadium, while the Nerazzurri will rely on their class, quality and experience as reigning league champions to come through a testing clash in Naples.

What the teams are saying

Napoli manager Antonio Conte refuses to underestimate Inter Milan:
“But Inter… We’re talking about a team that’s won the Scudetto, reached the Champions League final […] They have the ambition to go all the way. It would be an insult to suggest that I’d underestimate them. They’re a grand team, an historic team that are used to winning.”

Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi acknowledges the fine work done by his counterpart:

“Coach Conte has already managed to give the team an excellent organisation, which is strong and of high quality. We know Napoli, they are an organised team […]. We know their qualities and we are preparing to have a great match.”

Players to watch

Romelu Lukaku, Napoli
A former Inter Milan favourite, Romelu Lukaku is now absolutely hated by the Nerazzurri, but he knows he has the faith of Napoli boss Antonio Conte.

The Belgian striker would love to score a goal or two to boost his club’s hopes of dethroning Inter as champions of Italy.

Nicolo Barella, Inter Milan
With Napoli being such a physical and mobile team through midfield, Inter will need the talismanic Nicolo Barella to be at his best in the ‘engine room’ battle. The 28-year-old will look to bring his energy and combativeness to this key clash.

Head-to-head

In head-to-head stats, Napoli and Inter Milan have met in 177 matches across all competitions dating back as far as 1926.

The Nerazzurri have claimed 81 wins compared to 52 for the Partenopei, while 44 games have been drawn.

When the teams last met, in a Serie A match at the San Siro in November 2024, they played out a 1-1 draw.

Scott McTominay’s opener for Napoli was cancelled out by Hakan Calhanoglu’s equaliser for Inter.
