Serem bags first Kenyan silver in All African Games

Former World U-20 champion Amos Serem bagged the first Kenyan silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase  final as athletics started on Monday night at the 13th All African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Serem clocked 8.25.77, ahead of his compatriot Simon Kiprop, who won bronze in 8.26.19.

Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia won gold in 8.24.30.

Kenyan hopes of winning a first  gold medal on the night went up in smoke as 3000msc World Record holder Beatrice Chepkoech finished 4th in  5,000m women’s final.

Chepkoech finished the 12.5-lap race in 15.31.71 minutes, as Ethiopians registered a clean podium sweep led by Medina Kumanda in 15.4.32.

Kenya lies 25th in the medal standings, with 1 silver and 8 bronze medals.
