Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis ChirChir and EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo have been summoned to appear before the Senate next week on Tuesday to shed light on the Embakasi gas explosion that left 10 people dead and injured more than 200 others.

The two had been summoned to appear before the Committee on Wednesday.

However, Energy CS clarified his absence by sending a letter to the committee, stating that he out of the country.

The committee led by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga ruled that the CS, his Principal Secretary and the EPRA DG must appear before them next week or risk being fined Ksh500,000.

“We must come up with stringent measures to ensure this tragedy does not happen again. It is high time we find out if there are such outlets in residential areas and shut them,” said Wamatinga.

Last Wednesday, the court allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain four suspects, including the Embakasi gas plant owner, Derrick Kimathi, for 21 days pending investigations.

A fifth suspect linked to the tragedy, Isaac Kipchirchir, is also being detained at Embakasi Police Station for 14 days pending the completion of investigations.
