A section of leaders from the Mount Kenya region has expressed its backing of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the political kingpin of the region.
The leaders who included former and elected said they were fronting Gachagua to be the undisputed leader of the region, taking over from former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The Deputy President knows how much I respect him and support his push for reforms in the coffee sector, amongst others. I declare here today that the senior most politician in Mt. Kenya region is none other than Rigathi Gachagua,” Duncan Maina Mathenge, Nyeri Town MP said during a burial ceremony attended by Gachagua in Nyeri County Wednesday.
“I support Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to take over the mantle as the Mt. Kenya kingpin. I still hope it happens. Your Excellency, we are your good foot soldiers. We will continue to support you,” Njoroge Wainaina, Kieni MP
His sentiments receiving the backing of Nyeri County Woman Rep Rahab Mukami.
“Your Excellency, you are our leader, and we love and honour you. I can assure you that we are standing firm with you. We are urging you to continue uniting us as the Mountain leaders,” she said
Former Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia, also in attendance, asked Gachagua to continue mobilizing support for the region to ensure Mt. Kenya speaks with one voice.
“I’d like to urge all of us to pray for the country and its leadership for unity. Your Excellency continue uniting the Mt. Kenya region. You are the senior most politician, and we recognize you as such,” he said
The Deputy President, on his part, continued his call for leaders in the region to remain calm and support ongoing initiatives to promote unity.
“Our Nyeri leaders, please maintain peace and harmony amongst yourselves. I encourage our community to continue supporting one another,” he said
The DP was in the company of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, his Deputy David Kinaniri, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami, host Mp Duncan Mathenge, Kieni MP Wainaina Njoroge, former Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia and some members of the Nyeri county assembly.
