South African rapper, born Kiernan Forbes but popularly known as AKA will receive a posthumous award at the scheduled 2023 BET awards. The rapper was gunned down in Durban, South Africa in February in what the police have since reported to be a targeted killing. He was 35.
The “Congratulate” rapper will receive the “Global Visionary Award” for his global impact on the hip-hop landscape. In a tribute to the star, the Mpofu-Walsh, a writer and academic said that AKA had been destined for greatness.
His parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, will accept the award on his behalf.
Also scheduled to receive awards on the same night are VERZUZ founders Timbaland and Swizz Beats. The revered super producers will be on hand to receive the Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award from the founder and CEO of Rock The Bells, LL COOL J. The award will honour the pair for their cultural hip-hop contributions and boundless creativity
The ceremony is set to take place on October 10.
