Rwanda has discovered hydrocarbons in Lake Kivu, marking a significant milestone in the country’s quest for energy independence and economic growth.

Hydrocarbons, which include oil and natural gas, are organic compounds found beneath the Earth’s surface that serve as critical sources of energy and raw materials for industries.

If Rwanda successfully confirms and develops these resources, the country could benefit in several ways, including reducing energy imports, creating jobs, boosting government revenues and fostering industrial growth.

A seismic survey conducted by the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board (RMB) between 2021 and 2022 revealed the potential for oil and gas resources in the lake, part of the Eastern African Rift Valley system.

The study found that the Lake Kivu basin is about 3.5 kilometres deep and identified 13 promising drilling sites with hydrocarbon indicators.

RMB is now inviting investors and industry players to participate in further exploration, development, and production efforts.

The discovery presents a unique opportunity to enhance Rwanda’s energy sector and contribute to its economic transformation.
