The Government will roll out the mass the vaccination of livestock starting January 2025, President William Ruto has said.
Speaking Thursday after holding talks with the leadership of United Democratic Movement (UDM) party, State House Nairobi, the Head of State said the vaccination programme is meant to effectively control livestock diseases and ensure healthier breeds.
He noted that previous exercises to vaccinate livestock were not effective and efficient because it was done in selected parts of the country.
Under the new program, vaccination will cover 22 million cattle and 50 million sheep and goats in all parts of our country.
“It will be the beginning of more government investment in the livestock sub-sector to make it achieve its immense potential and make its full contribution to the economy,” said President William Ruto.
The President had earlier explained that the programme will help prevent animal diseases and thus secure the international market for livestock products.
“This will ensure we access both national and international markets for our livestock products,” he said during the Maa Cultural Festival in Samburu National Reserve, Samburu County.
The Government has also allocated Ksh1 billion for restocking of livestock lost during the drought in the northern part of the country.
He also said that the government will buy 55,000 goats and sheep to distribute to farmers, ensuring that every family is supported.
The President was joined by the leadership of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party led by party leader and Mandera Senator Ali Roba and deputy party leaders Mohamud Mohamud (Marsabit Governor) and Hon Abdullahi Bashir Sheikh (Mandera North).
