President William Ruto has urged police officers to ensure adequate safety for all judicial officers following the tragic death of Makadara Law Courts Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.
In a statement on Monday, President Ruto described attacks against judicial officers as criminal acts that undermine the rule of law.
Kivuti was shot by a police officer while on duty at the Makadara Law Courts last week on Thursday.
Ruto condemned the act, stating that police should uphold their duty of protecting all citizens, including judicial officers, without fail.
“The confrontation, threats, or attacks of any form against judicial officers are unacceptable, criminal, and undermine the rule of law,” said Ruto.
“Under no circumstances should police abandon this essential obligation or become threats to the safety and security of the people.”
“What happened to Hon. Kivuti is unacceptable; it should never happen again. I urge the police to ensure the safety of our judicial officers at all times as they carry out their duties.”
The head of state hailed Kivuti as a dedicated and hardworking judicial professional who served Kenyans with commitment.
Kivuti was shot by a senior police officer who was reportedly upset by her ruling against his wife and later succumbed to her injuries on June 14 at Nairobi Hospital.
