The Kenya Red Cross has urged residents living along River Tana and other low-lands in Garissa County to move to higher ground as rains season begins to avoid displacement and potential loss of life.

In previous years, heavy rains have left residents marooned leading to displacement and destruction of property.

In some instances, lives have been lost including in April last year when at least 15 people drowned at Kona Punda along the Garissa-Madogo stretch after their boat capsized.

Speaking at Garissa primary school play ground after holding procession to mark 60 years of humanitarian action since Kenya Red was started, Kenya Red Cross North Eastern region head Hassan Musa urged communities living along the river to take precautionary measures.

“As we celebrate 60 years of service to humanity, I want to take this opportunity to appeal to our people especially those residing along the river to do the necessary and move to higher grounds,” said Musa.

“We have witnessed the devastation caused by floods before. We don’t want to lose lives again. People should adhere to the safety guidelines provided and take the necessary precautions,” he added.

He noted that the Kenya Red Cross is well-prepared for emergencies, with pre-positioned boats and tractors to assist in rescue operations.

He also urged residents to undergo first aid training to better respond to emergencies.

“This region has faced various emergencies, from floods and drought to insecurity. Having more people trained in first aid will be invaluable in times of crisis,” he said.

The event included a procession from the Tana River Bridge through Garissa town, culminating in a simulation exercise at Garissa Primary School.

The drill demonstrated how the Red Cross responds to emergencies, including accidents involving bodaboda riders.
