Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday held discussions with a delegation of Tanzanian opposition leaders who paid him a courtesy call.

In a statement on social media, Odinga said the talks focused on strengthening democracy across the continent and the role of both ruling and opposition parties in driving national development.

He urged the opposition leaders led by Tundu Lissu to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement with the government in the interest of the nation and the preservation of Tanzanian democracy.

“I look forward to a peaceful and transparent election in the upcoming Tanzanian polls,” he stated.

Tanzania is scheduled to hold its general elections in October 2025 for both presidential and parliamentary seats.

In January 2025, the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), endorsed incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan as its candidate.

President Suluhu ascended to the presidency in 2021 following the death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, and is now seeking her first full term through the electoral process.

Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) led by Lissu has yet to officially announce its presidential candidate for the upcoming election.
