In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare services in Western Kenya, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Harry Kimtai, recently met with a delegation from the Kakamega County Government.
The delegation, led by Dr. Bernard Wesonga, County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, discussed the completion of the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The hospital, initiated in 2016, is designed to have a capacity of 750 beds.
The meeting focused on the critical aspects of resource allocation necessary for the hospital’s completion and operationalisation.
Additionally, discussions included forming a technical committee to develop a roadmap for the hospital’s handover.
Dr. Wesonga underscored the hospital’s importance, noting its pivotal role in healthcare provision and its potential to spur regional economic growth.
He emphasized that the facility would not only serve the healthcare needs of Kakamega County but also benefit the broader Western Kenya and Lake Region economic bloc.
Kimtai affirmed the national government’s support for the project, highlighting its alignment with the goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
He pointed out that the hospital’s completion would significantly contribute to medical tourism in the region, attracting patients from neighbouring counties and beyond.
Both parties expressed optimism about the hospital’s potential to transform healthcare delivery in the region.
The formation of the technical committee is expected to streamline the handover process and ensure the hospital becomes fully operational in the near future.
