President launches Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project

President William Ruto Thursday launched the Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project in Lang’ata Constituency, Nairobi County.

This initiative aims to address the critical housing shortage in urban areas while creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

The project which covers 38 acres aims to deliver 14,754 residential units.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Lot 5 in Mugumoini, Lang’ata Constituency, President William Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to affordable housing saying the projects will eradicate slums in Lang’ata and Kibra and turn them into estates that provide decent living conditions to people.

The Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project is designed as a comprehensive mixed-use development that combines residential units with community amenities.

The project will have 60 residential blocks with 15,960 residential units, two community centers, and a primary school.

Similarly, the Kibra Southlands Social Housing Project will feature 72 residential blocks rising to 19 storeys (G+18), making it one of the most extensive high-rise housing developments in the country.

The units are categorized as follows: Social housing will comprise of 4,200 units in 30 blocks, the affordable housing will have 30 blocks with 6,447 units, while the affordable market housing will comprise of 12 blocks with a total of 3,717 units.

The development will also include essential community infrastructure such as a primary school, two community centers, and 390 retail shops. Improved roads, modern utilities, and recreational spaces will enhance the quality of life for residents.

Economic and Social Impact

The project is expected to generate thousands of jobs, providing opportunities for construction workers, engineers, architects, and service providers. Once completed, it will create permanent employment in property management, security, maintenance, and retail businesses.

Beyond employment, the project aims to uplift the community by reducing overcrowding and improving living conditions, enhancing access to education through an on-site primary school and promoting social integration by accommodating families from different income levels.

Further the project is also expected to strengthen security with structured housing, street lighting, and community oversight.

According to the Housing Ministry, the master plan and architectural designs for the project have been finalized, engineering studies conducted, and construction procurement is underway.
