Reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won this year’s London Marathon in a superb way, shattering the women’s only World record on Sunday, while Alexander Mutiso Munyao registered his 1st major marathon win to bag the men’s title.
Jepchirchir cut the tape in 2 hours 16 minutes and 16 secs to break the women’s only world record of 2:17:01, held jointly by 2021 London marathon champion Joyciline Jepkosgei and last year’s runner-up Megertu Alemu of Ethiopia.
Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia finished 2d in 2 hours,16 minutes and 23 secs while Joyceline Jepkosgei completed podium places in 2:16:24.
Other Kenyans Brigid Kosgei and Sheila Chepkurui finished in the 5th and 6th positions, respectively, while Ruth Chepng’etich finished in the 10th.
Munyao shook off stiff competition from experienced Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia to emerge the men’s champion in 2:04:01 followed by Bekele in 2:04:15,while Emile Cairess of Britain finished 3rd.
