The Deputy Chief of Staff, Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President, Eliud Owalo, has hailed the Maragua Ridge Irrigation Project as a transformative initiative for farmers in Murang’a County.
The Ksh 312 million project, now 90 per cent complete, will benefit 848 farmers across 400 acres in Kamahuha, Maragua Constituency, providing a crucial boost to agricultural productivity in the traditionally dry region.
“This project will be a game-changer,” Owalo said during an inspection tour of key national projects in Murang’a.
“If these farmers are well-organized and receive the necessary government support, particularly in extension services and market access, we will see a vibrant rural economy with money circulating at the grassroots.”
Already, 400 farmers are connected to the irrigation system, and over 12,700 jobs have been created through the project.
The initiative is expected to enhance food security and spur economic growth, enabling farmers to cultivate fruits, vegetables, maize, and beans year-round.
Owalo was accompanied by Murang’a County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha, officers from the Government Delivery Unit (GDU), and local security officials during the tour.
Beyond irrigation, the government is making significant strides in housing development across Murang’a.
Owalo also inspected the Makuyu Affordable Housing Project, a Ksh 1.8 billion initiative under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
Launched three weeks ago, the project is progressing steadily, with foundation works underway for 764 housing units.
In Kandara Constituency, the Makenji Affordable Housing Project is also advancing, with 49 per cent of construction completed.
The Ksh 491.5 million project will deliver 220 housing units upon completion, providing affordable homes and generating employment opportunities for local youth.
“These projects are more than just infrastructure—they symbolize a major leap forward in Murang’a’s economic and social transformation,” Owalo stated.
“By enhancing food security, creating jobs, and expanding access to affordable housing, the government is ensuring lasting progress for the people of Murang’a.”
With sustained government support and community collaboration, Murang’a is poised for unprecedented growth, ushering in a new era of prosperity for its residents.
