One person has been arrested for attempting to rob motorists along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass following a string of similar incidents.
The suspect, Martin Otieno, was apprehended Thursday during a coordinated crackdown led by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, alongside officers from DCI Lang’ata and DCI Dagoretti.
The intensified patrols are part of ongoing efforts to curb rising insecurity in the area.
Otieno’s tactic involved placing a large stone on the road to block traffic, creating an opportunity to ambush drivers.
While on patrol, officers were alerted by a loud crash and rushed to the scene, where they found a Volkswagen, registration KYW 690, had collided with the obstruction while heading toward Ngong Road.
The vehicle’s occupants, a family, recounted their terrifying experience, explaining how Otieno emerged from a nearby thicket after the collision and robbed them of their valuables.
The officers swiftly pursued the suspect into the thicket and arrested him. Otieno is currently in police custody and will be arraigned on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to remain vigilant as they ramp up security measures along the Southern Bypass.
