The Kenya Teachers Nyanza Regional athletics competition began in earnest at the Kosele stadium in Homabay County.
The two-day event has attracted eight colleges from Nyanza region battling for honours in different athletics events.
Kenya Teachers Colleges Sports Association,KTCSA, Nyanza region chairman Timothy Atuti officially opened the competitions.
Some of the colleges competing at the games include: Rachuonyo Teachers training college; the host of the games, St Paul’s TTC, Kenyenya TTC, Migori TTC, Nyanchwa TTC, Kamagambo TTC, Asumbi TTC and Borabu Teachers training college.
Participants who qualify from the competitions will proceed to the Nationals which will take place from 1st June – 6th June in Machakos.
“Those who will qualify will head directly to the Asumbi Training Camp on Thursday before proceeding to Machakos on Saturday, “Mr Atuti said
The opening day on Wednesday saw runners battling in several disciplines among them the 10,000m men’s and women’s races.
In the women’s 400m race Vivin and Beatrice Chepkorir both from Asumbi TTC claimed the first and second places respectively.
Meshach Kibet and Tito Kiptoo all from Asumbi TTC claimed the first positions in the men’s 400m hurdles race.
Other events that took place include: High jump, discus, javelin and a race for those that who are partially blind.
