Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo was put on the spot over the alleged mismanagement of Ksh 5.85 billion.
The Governor who appeared before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee Wednesday told Senators that confusion over a divided Assembly is partly to blame for derailed queries.
But senators could not buy that explanation accusing the governor of deliberately evading accountability and warned that the county is on the brink of a financial crisis.
Senators also questioned why the County Executive is quick to present budget proposals but reluctant to account for how funds have been used.
This as MCAs raised fresh concerns, alleging that an illegal supplementary budget have been passed outside the Assembly’s official structure, with key operations now being run by an impeached speaker.
With just three days left before the statutory audit deadline, senators are now proposing an investigation into the usage of funds in the county after the Auditor General revealed massive misuse of funds in the county.
Committee chair Moses Kajwang said the senate will be considering tougher measures, including a deeper investigation into county spending.
