The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has expressed concern over the prevailing political situation in the country.
The commission issued a statement on Tuesday amid heightened political temperatures over the Deputy President’s impeachment hearing underway at the National Assembly.
NCIC Chair Rev Samuel Kobia observes that the unfolding events have negatively affected the social fabric and cohesion of the society as such, he is calling upon the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) and the National Council of Elders to dedicate October 10, 2024, as a day for repentance, forgiveness, and redemption.
“The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is deeply concerned about the prevailing socio-political and economic climate in Kenya. As we reflect on our journey together as a people, let us remember that we have come a long way in the struggle for and since gaining independence ” Kobia says.
Reconciliation
While calling for soul searching, Kobia regretted that the current state of affairs marked by political divisions, social unrest, and economic uncertainty threatened the unity of Kenyans.
“As we navigate a landscape marked by political divisions, social unrest, and economic uncertainty, we must pause and reflect on our collective journey as Kenyans. It is critical to ask ourselves: Where did the rain start beating us? When did the threads that bind us as a nation begin to fray? “ he posed as he urged for solutions that promote cohesion, unity, healing and reconciliation.
He made an impassioned plea to religious leaders to designate time and spaces this Thursday on Mazingira Day, a public holiday for prayer and deep reflection.
“Like the waters of a healing river, our unity can wash away the barriers that divide us. By coming together in this spirit of reconciliation, we can lay the foundation for a united and harmonious nation, fostering understanding and healing among all members of our society” he said.
He pledged that NCIC remains committed to promoting national cohesion, integration, and reconciliation.
“We therefore urge all Kenyans to work together towards building a united Kenya which will be economically prosperous, politically stable and socially cohesive. In this spirit, let us recognize that our strength lies in our unity and our shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous nation” he said.
Religious leaders who have called for a political truce have urged Kenyans to remain calm regardless of the impeachment outcome.
They noted that the constant politicking is a diversionary tactic to keep Kenyans from concentrating on issues affecting them such as the Adani deal, SHIF, Agricultural bills and the university funding model.
