Must watch upcoming Showmax Movies and Series for October

Showmax has revealed its action-packed tantalizing October movies and series lineup for Kenyan viewers and a host of classics which are making a return to create a nostalgia.

The most popular films on the list are suspenseful thrillers and action flicks, including Hacks, the Best Comedy Emmy winner, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Ghostbusters’ Frozen Empire, which will be available for streaming on Showmax starting on October 28, is one of the top 15 blockbuster films of the year.

It teams up the Spengler family with the original Ghostbusters, who have established a top-secret research lab to further the art of ghost-busting. The movie returns the Spengler family to the legendary New York City firehouse, where it all began.

Ghostbusters from the past and present must band together to prevent a second Ice Age from occurring when the discovery of an antiquated artifact summons an army of ghosts that sends shivers down the spine of the city.

As the highest-grossing horror film of the previous year worldwide, Five Nights at Freddy’s is available for streaming starting on Monday, October 14.

Five Nights at Freddy’s, which is produced by Blumhouse (M3GAN, Get Out), centers on Mike, a disturbed young man who looks after his sister Abby, age ten.

In an attempt to maintain custody of Abby after being dismissed, Mike accepts a job as a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, an abandoned theme restaurant.

However, Mike quickly learns that everything at Freddy’s is not what it seems as he is pulled into the horrific core of a nightmare that is beyond description.

Another intriguing film, THE NUN II, will be available for streaming starting on Thursday, October 31.

The global blockbuster film’s follow-up follows Sister Irene as she confronts Valak, the demon nun and the main antagonist of The Conjuring universe, once more.

Emmy winner Storm Reid (The Last of Us, Euphoria) plays Sister Debra, while Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) plays Sister Irene. Bonnie Aarons returns as the demon nun.

From a script co-written by Akela Cooper (M3GAN), Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) directs. One of the producers is James Wan, who directed The Conjuring at the beginning.

This year, The Nun II was shortlisted for ten Golden Scythe Horror Awards, including a Visual Effects Society Award, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Actress (Farmiga), and Supporting Actress (Reid).

Monkey Man, the SXSW 2024 Audience Award winner, stars Oscar contender Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) as Kid, a man seeking revenge against the corrupt politicians who killed his mother and who victimize the weak and impoverished on a regular basis.
The film will be available for streaming starting on October 28.

Rotten Tomatoes gives Monkey Man an 89% rating from critics, while Time Out called it “possibly the most ferocious mainstream action movie since The Raid.”

The Exorcist: Believer, from Blumhouse (Get Out, M3GAN) and filmmaker David Gordon Green (who brought the Halloween property back to life), is now available.

The Arthur the King broadcast will launch on Monday, October 14

In the gripping true story of the unshakable friendship that developed between professional adventure racer Michael Light (played by Oscar contender Mark Wahlberg) and a tenacious street dog named Arthur, who followed the team over 700 kilometers during a demanding 10-day endurance race, Arthur the King is told.

The film is directed by BAFTA winner Simon Cellan Jones (Years and Years, Our Friends in the North) and is based on the book Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home by real-life adventure racer Mikael Lindnord.

Classics movies as well as series are making a return this October on Showmax including:

No Country For Old Men, which started streaming from 3 October: Set in the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, No Country For Old Men won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Directing and Writing for the Coen brothers, and Best Actor for Javier Bardem.

The Crow, which returns from 17 October: 30 years before the Bill Skarsgård version, Brandon Lee starred as The Crow, tragically dying on the set of what became a cult classic.

Ip Man (starting October 28) Ip Man, which takes place during the Japanese invasion of China, draws inspiration from the life of Bruce Lee’s real-life instructor.
According to the consensus of critics, the multi-award winning martial arts classic has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is described as “one of the most exciting – and refreshingly character-driven – martial arts films in years” and is “at once beholden to the established conventions of the genre and delightfully subversive of them.”

HACKS S3 | Showmax Premiere | Start Binge on Friday, October 11 Hacks S3, which won the Emmy for Best Comedy this year, resumes with Deborah Vance feeling quite successful after her stand-up special, while Ava looks for fresh possibilities back in Los Angeles.


Hacks has already received a fourth renewal. PENGUIN S1 | Mondays through November 11 Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, tries to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld after the events of The Batman.

The Penguin, which is helmed by Craig Zobel, a nominee for an Emmy (Mare of Easttown), has Colin Farrell in a role that is unrecognizable, together with Cristin Milioti, winner of the Critics Choice Super Award (Palm Springs, Made for Love, Fargo), as Sofia Falcone.

INDUSTRY S3 | Premieres on Showmax | Mondays through October 14 HBO has renewed Industry for a fourth season, since the show’s viewership grew to 1.6 million on average per episode, approximately 40% more than that of S2.
