The MTV Staying Alive Foundation has unveiled the cast of its upcoming series, MTV Shuga, ahead of its premiere.
From October 11th-13th, aspiring actors flocked University of Nairobi (main campus) for their chance to be part of the show’s thrilling comeback to Kenya after over a decade.
The MTV Shuga Mashariki open auditions offered a unique platform for fresh talent to step into the spotlight and join a series that continues to captivate millions across the continent through authentic storytelling that reflects the real experiences of young people.
In addition to the in-person auditions, MTV Shuga Mashariki also welcomed aspiring actors from across Kenya through virtual submissions, ensuring that talent from all corners of the country had the opportunity to participate in the excitement surrounding the show’s return.
Leading the cast are Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Wilson Muchemi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar and Makena Kahuha.
Mitchelle Kimathi, Country Manager for the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, emphasised the significance of the show’s return.
“MTV Shuga Mashariki marks a bold new chapter in the Shuga universe. We are proud to bring together a diverse cast that authentically reflects Kenyan culture while addressing the complex challenges young people face daily,” she said.
This season is part of a landmark collaboration with Shujaaz Inc., aimed at challenging gender norms and their impact on the outcomes of young people, as part of the Surround Sound Kenya Programme.
MTV Shuga Mashariki’s directorial team features three celebrated Kenyan directors: June Ndinya, Mkaiwawi Mwakaba and Likarion Wainaina.
