Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital has successfully performed Hepatocellular (HCC) resection surgeries on two liver cancer patients marking yet another milestone.

The patients, a 30yr old man, with Liver Cancer from Busia County and a 43yr old woman from Uasin Gishu County, are both recovering well.

According to the hospital, the 30yr old man had a 16x8cm sized tumor with a life expectancy of about 3 months if not removed.

On the other hand, the woman had giant vascular tumors of the liver which were removed using an innovative cost saving technique (a combination of diathermy & normal saline). The technique costs less than $1 as a substitute for Tissue link which has an average cost of $500.

The procedures were conducted in collaboration Moi University and Peruvian Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN) during the past week.

“With time, MTRH would be able to comfortably provide Liver Transplant Surgical Services,” the hospital stated.

Liver cancers account for the second largest number of cancer related deaths in the world with approximately 782,000 new cases reported annually.

The Surgical team included Dr Eloy Ruiz (Surgical Oncologist, INEN), Dr Andrew Wandera (Surgical Gastroenterologist, MU/MTRH), Dr. Aida Kenseko (General Surgeon, MTRH), Dr Andrew Wainaina(General Surgery Resident, MU), and Dr Elena Onofre (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, INEN).

Others were Dr Obadiah Samoei (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Dr Josephat Kerama (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Jessica Alarcon (Theatre Nurse, INEN), Mariah Tininah, Hadia Anoo Margaret, and Everlyne Torori (Theatre Nurses, MTRH).
