Malindi

Report by Irene Muchuma

Malindi is one of the few places in Kenya that has a rich multicultural heritage, most of which still remain including several world heritage sites. Some of the county’s heritage dates back centuries and includes tourist attractions like the Vasco Da Gama Pillar which have made Malindi an important destination in the world.

Blending the county’s rich culture and art is the White Elephant which has an open-air art gallery perfect for historical and art enthusiasts.

Opened in 1984, The White Elephant is the creation of artist Armando Tanzini whose goal was to create a lodge that combines nature and art; the accommodation faces the National Marine Park in Malindi and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve which is home to elephants and more than 200 species of birds.
