Lungalunga detectives in Kwale County have launched a manhunt for suspects after the brutal murder of an 87-year-old woman at Mwololo village.
According to a report made by the village chairperson, the elderly woman was found deceased in her home, with multiple machete wounds.
Her only goat was also stolen during the incident.
“We are treating this as a serious case of robbery and homicide,” stated a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) statement on X.
DCI detectives based at Lungalunga have since taken over the matter, and are jointly with Mwereni location authorities combing the area for leads to her killers.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after Kisii law enforcement officers pursued him for trafficking 146kg of bhang along the Kisii-Migori highway.
DCI detectives reported that they had set up a roadblock at the Iyabe Bomokora area, where they intercepted a Toyota Land Cruiser TX with two occupants, including the suspect.
However, the driver attempted to evade capture by speeding off as officers moved in to search the vehicle. This sparked a pursuit, but the attempt was short-lived as the vehicle became stuck in a ditch, forcing the occupants to flee.
One of the occupants, identified as Collins Otieno, was apprehended with six sacks of bhang found in their vehicle. A reflective motor vehicle plate with the number KDL 841X was also discovered in a carrier bag.
Otieno was taken to Suneka Police Station for further processing, while the seized narcotics and the vehicle were held at Kisii Central Police Station as evidence.
Efforts to locate the fleeing driver are ongoing.
