The Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG) has announced plans to develop a comprehensive platform where Kenyans, including Gen-Zs, can engage on critical issues affecting the nation.

This initiative responds to recent protests led by Kenya’s Gen-Z, which have sparked a vital national conversation.

KMSWG acknowledged the courage and determination of these young Kenyans, who have brought pressing issues to the forefront of public discourse.

“The voices of Gen-Zs demand respectful and genuine attention from authorities,” KMSWG stated.

The group in addition emphasized the importance of leaders at all levels being accountable and ensuring that the debate progresses constructively, without harm to the people or the nation.

The KMSWG further commended the government for withdrawing the Finance Bill (2024) in response to the protests, viewing it as a sign of willingness to listen and adapt.

However, they noted that the underlying issues raised by Kenyans, led by Gen-Zs, remain unresolved.

“These concerns range from economic hardship and youth unemployment to educational challenges and the need for good governance.”

In a statement, KMSWG highlighted the importance of media in facilitating constructive engagement and dialogue.

“We empathize with the frustrations of young Kenyans, including unemployment, bureaucratic hurdles in accessing public services, and the challenging business environment,” the group said.

They acknowledged the legitimacy of these demands and stressed the need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions.

The KMSWG praised the government’s initial gestures of listening and engaging with Gen-Zs and the public, recognizing the significant stake young people have in the nation’s future.

“We are ready to facilitate genuine and transparent engagement on the key issues presented,” they affirmed.

Kenya’s tradition of upholding freedom of expression was underscored by KMSWG, condemning the brutal response to peaceful protests that resulted in deaths and injuries.

They also condemned attacks on press freedom, including threats to shut down media organizations, and called for a thorough and independent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.

“A strong and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy,” the group emphasized.

Moving forward, KMSWG committed to providing accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting that reflects diverse perspectives within Kenyan society.

They noted that they recognize the decentralized nature of the recent protests and the absence of traditional leadership but pledged to continue engaging with this critical segment of society through in-depth coverage.

KMSWG’s forthcoming platform aims to foster open dialogue on national issues, reinforcing the belief that a strong and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.

“We are committed to working with Gen-Z, the government, and all Kenyans to ensure the media remains a credible source of information and a platform for diverse voices,” the group stated.
