A section of elected women leaders has raised concerns about the increased cases of neonatal and maternal deaths in the country.
Speaking in Nairobi in an event dubbed Stop Obstetric Violence, the women led by Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) Vice Chairperson Beatrice Elachi, vowed not to relent in advocating and protecting the rights of women, saying violence against women will not be tolerated.
Her sentiments were echoed by Githunguri Lawmaker Muthoni Wa Muchomba who has sponsored an obstetric violence bill in parliament, calling on Kenyans to support the bill that seeks to address the menace.
Through the Heshimu Uzazi campaign, the leaders said there is a need for a legal and legislative framework to be implemented urgently to address the monster once and for all.
The obstetric violence bill seeks to ensure pregnant mothers have a dignified and respectful childbirth experience, free from any form of violence or abuse.
