Kenyan filmmaker, Brian Obra took home the award for Best Documentary Short Film at the CANEX Film Festival held in Algiers, Algeria.
The award-winning documentary is a 3-minute and 10-second evocative short film showcasing footage from the Anti-Finance Bill protests on June 16th.
It captures the voices of protesters against a chaotic backdrop filled with gunshots and police officers in pursuit.
The film also depicts injured protesters struggling to access medical assistance amidst the unrest.
Obra took to X on Sunday to thank his supporters in a heartfelt post.
“The support I’ve felt for my art since day one has been immeasurable, thank you for keeping me going even when I had nothing left in me to…I remain indebted to all of you.”
The second edition of the CANEX Festival took place from October 16 to 19 under the theme ‘One People, United in Culture, Creating for the World’.
Submissions fell into three categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Animation, with three films shortlisted in each category.
Beyond the competition, the weekend also featured live music performances, film screenings, pop-ups, and cultural masterclasses for the attendees, enriching the festival experience.
The CANEX programme, an initiative of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) aims to recognise young African film-makers while also providing them with the opportunities to connect with potential investors and other collaborators.
