Kenya has reaffirmed its dedication to combating malnutrition by ratifying the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) Nutrition Joint Programme 2023-2026.
Co-led by the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, WFP, FAO, UNHCR, and WHO, the program adopts a multi-sectoral and collaborative approach to enhance nutrition outcomes, with a focus on strengthening community health systems.
Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, who signed the document on behalf of the Ministry of Health, emphasized the progress Kenya has made, citing a reduction in stunting rates from 40 per cent in 1993 to 18 per cent in 2022 and a rise in exclusive breastfeeding rates to 60 per cent.
However, she noted persistent challenges, including regional disparities and dietary deficiencies.
“This joint programme reaffirms our commitment to addressing malnutrition holistically by scaling up targeted interventions, building community resilience, and prioritizing vulnerable populations,” said Muthoni. “Together with our partners, we are confident we can achieve #ZeroHunger and build a healthier, more nourished Kenya.”
The initiative aims to expand nutrition interventions, promote sustainable food systems, and integrate nutrition-sensitive strategies across sectors to establish long-term solutions for food and nutrition security.
