Kenya dominates inaugural East Africa Wrestling Championship

Kenyan wrestlers collected the lion’s share of medals on the final day of the East Africa championship which ended today at Strathmore University, Nairobi.

The two day championship attracted more than 50 wrestlers from six nations.

Team Kenya won all the medals on offer in the men’s 80 and 70 kilograms categories and narrowly missed out on winning all the medals in the women’s 70 kilograms categories, taking gold and bronze.

Mathayo Mahabila won gold in the 80 kilograms category after beating compatriot James Omwanje who won silver as Brian Oloo completed the podium with the bronze medal.

It was the same story in the 70kgs men as Kenneth Koech took gold ahead of Benson Njoroge and Alfred Odhiambo who won silver and bronze respectively.

Jane Kwamboka was the best wrestler in the 70kgs category winning gold ahead of Vihanshy Simran of Mauritius who took silver as another Kenyan Eunice Mburu settled for the bronze medal.

Other Kenyan medalists on the final day of the championship were Emma Nekesa and Emmily Wanyama who won silver and bronze in the 60kgs category and Diana Bosibori and Joy Wanjira who matched that feat in the 60kgs junior category.
