Police are investigating the circumstances under which a senior police officer was accidentally shot at the Kegonga Police Station, Kuria, Migori County.
James Mugo, Kegonga sub-county police commander, was fatally shot by the officer in charge of the armoury Monday evening.
According to police reports, the deceased had visited the armoury to retrieve his firearm when the officer in charge of the armoury unintentionally discharged a bullet, hitting him in the thigh.
Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu stated that the officer was following safety protocols before handing over the firearm, but the accidental discharge led to the tragic incident.
The officer was rushed to the Kegonga sub-county hospital and later transferred to Migori referral hospital, where he unfortunately passed away during treatment due to excessive bleeding.
The body is preserved at the facility mortuary pending autopsy.
